Teaching at The Island School

The Island School is an independent academic program in The Bahamas for high school sophomores or juniors initially founded by The Lawrenceville School in 1999.  The 14-week academic course of study includes honors classes in science, field research, history, math, art, and English literature, as well as physical/outdoor education and a weekly community service component.  In order to make each of The Island School semesters successful, we look for educators with high energy, organization and improvisation skills, a willingness to stretch beyond traditional job descriptions, and the ability to take care of themselves in an island environment lacking the traditional "big city" comforts.

Our teachers juggle many different responsibilities beyond the academics to include morning exercise, chores along with the students, and evening and weekend duties. We encourage you to apply if you are an experienced teacher of ecology or environmental science, mathematics, environmental art, English literature, or history.  Medical training, experience in SCUBA instruction and/or kayaking, and outdoor leadership skills are beneficial. We seek educators who can execute tasks related to the general operation of a remote campus setting: facilities maintenance, gear maintenance, special event support, office support, and general administration.

The hiring process begins in the spring and appointments are usually made by June.  Below is a listing of the regular teaching positions at The Island School. Compensation is dependent on experience and may include housing, health plan, and a travel stipend.

Elements of Ecology and Research
Our tropical marine ecology educators teach ecology, sustainable systems, and environmental issues. These educators also experienced in designing and supporting student field research projects and teaching the components of scientific writing. Applicants should feel inspired to teach this innovative experiential course and be willing to participate in the other responsibilities required to maintain this dynamic community and program.

Humanities Courses
The English and History courses are taught together by a team of up to four educators. This coordinated approach includes traditional classroom lectures, student led seminars, community outreach, local homestays, field trips, and guest lecturers. The team is responsible together for delivering classes and field experiences in the following two main areas:

•English Literature
Taught by educators with intimate knowledge of Derek Walcott's epic poem Omeros and experience teaching in a seminar style open format.  Educators also teach and assess critical and creative essay writing skills.

 •History of the Bahamas
Students are challenged with an approach to historical events which emphasizes the use of primary evidence to support arguments, the critical evaluation of the lenses of historical observers, and ethnography.  Knowledge of the history of The Bahamian islands, including geology, geography, indigenous people, the European influence, and modern Bahamian and Caribbean government and life is a must.

Applicants should feel inspired to teach this innovative experiential course and be willing to participate in the other responsibilities required to maintain this dynamic community and program.

Mathematics
Our mathematics educators are able to teach all levels of high school mathematics including algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus and statistics, as well as deliver hands-on modules that allow students of all levels to apply their mathematical knowledge to hands-on projects. Applicants should feel inspired to teach this innovative experiential course and be willing to participate in the other responsibilities required to maintain this dynamic community and program.

Environmental Art
The environmental are teacher focuses on creative and critical analysis skills. The emphasis of this course is to teach ways of interacting and connecting with the environment to express emotions and ideas. The instructor oversees student projects using digital cameras and image management on the computer. This course is different from your typical art class as it employs primarily natural materials, digital photography and other media devices. The students operate outside of the traditional art studio, literally creating sculptures and other artwork in the environment. Applicants should feel inspired to teach this innovative experiential course and be willing to participate in the other responsibilities required to maintain this dynamic community and program.

Teaching at the Deep Creek Middle School

The Deep Creek Middle School prepares a group of about 40 Bahamian students in grades 7-9 for the Bahamas Junior Certificate Examination offered by the Bahamas Ministry of Education. The students thrive when supported with their individual skill building on academic, life-skill, and interpersonal fronts. Parents choose the DCMS over local public schools because there is a lower student to faculty ratio, the method of instruction is innovative, and there is more individual attention. Students work in small classes and travel into the environment to learn about the history and geology of the island. School is open five days a week from 8:30am until 3:30 pm.

The DCMS facility also serves as a public library and community resource center after school and on weekends. Teachers offer classes in reading and computer skills to youngsters and health, computer skills, and other topics of interest to adults.

DCMS accepts resumes from educators with background to teach Mathematics, English, Basic Spanish, Social Studies, Religion, and General Science. Teachers from The Bahamas and from abroad are welcome to apply.
