ENVIRONMENTAL ART
The Island School Land and Environmental Art course focuses students on direct involvement with their immediate surroundings. By surveying historical and contemporary art created outside the context of a studio, this course encourages students to re-examine their personal relationship with the land and find creative and effective ways of expressing the results. The course begins by studying the environmental installations of artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, Robert Smithson, Christo and other Land and Environmental artists. Students also study the elements of sculpture and fundamentals of artistic digital photography and manipulation. Creating a variety of projects in the natural world, the emphasis is not purely on the aesthetic value of work but on the underlying ideas expressed through the students’ interactions with the surrounding landscape. The semester revolves around themes of Integration, Interruption and Involvement, explored in various natural media.
Technical areas explored include:
- Sculpture
- Digital Photography
- Observation
- Interpretation
- Critique
