What's going on at The Island School...

Leaving for the
Three-Day Trip

Life here is as busy as ever. The second kayak trip left on the 29th. Unlike the last trip the weather was pretty intense. The first night we had to do the lightening position a couple of times (squatting down with arms around the knees). After a very long night, we were all happy to get out of our tents which had developed puddles over night. The storm would just not let up and we were unable to paddle home, so the vans had to come and get us. The school never looked so great, and we all welcomed our beds that night.

Inevitable Socializing

Since that adventure, activity has calmed down a bit. After being here for nearly a month, we are all just adapting a routine, that is different than anything we have experienced previously. With the ocean just outside of our door, it is a constant temptation and distraction from our work. In this amazing and breathtaking location, we are all learning to appreciate our surroundings from the roads dotted with potholes to the bicycles with chronic flat tires. It's all great. And that is leaving out all the socializing that is inevitable. Not a day goes by that laughter does not echo up from our little school. The work is hard but the payoff is unquestionably beneficial.

Field trip to The Island School

On Wednesday the 26, teachers from local schools were invited to the Island School for a late lunch and lesson in computer skill. They were taught basic computer skills, such as how to create a document and use a variety of programs. On Wednesday the 4th the children from a previous school we had taught at, were able to take a field trip to the Island School. They had lunch and then half of the children were taught how to use computers and the other half went snorkeling to explore marine life. The children who wet snorkeling saw a variety of fish, including Angelfish, Barracudas, and Butterflyfish. These posters will be presented on December 2 at a science fair, which will take place at the Island School.

We have almost been here a month, although it feels like such a short time ago that we were all boarding the plane and saying good byes. Know that we are missing you all a great deal and you are in our thoughts every day. Keep that mail rolling in. we love it!

Until next time...
