One month has flown by since we arrived in the airport in Rock Sound. We have all been busy with lots of activities, work, and everyone has had their chance to go on a three day kayak trip. We have also been studying hard to pass our SCUBA certification exams. The weather has been a limiting factor to our diving. It has been awfully cold here (80 degrees, maybe a sweatshirt and pants), and mighty windy. Big time sailors, Molly and Jordan, worked all day Sunday and after a lot of hard work, got the Laser in the water under lighter wind.
Recently we completed our second athletic assessment and we’re proud to say that we have all improved in running, wall sits, pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups, and we’re looking pretty in shape (and tan)!
On October 6th we celebrated founder’s day (Chris Maxey’s birthday). The faculty surprised us with fire works and a bonfire, followed by a delicious banana cake. On the following night, the on- duty faculty organized an intense game of capture the flag. It was a battle of girls’ and boys’ North dorms against girls’ and boys’ South dorms. North’s Richard Woodhull led the team to victory, and then both teams enjoyed chocolate chip cookies (baked by the students) together.
We have all started preparing our costumes, in order to perform a Junkanoo performance in late October. Junkanoo is a Bahamian festival celebrated around Christmas time. We’ve started on our skirts, using only tape, wire, cardboard, and glue. Some of us are learning to play the drums and cowbells for the Rush. The Rush is the dancing part of the festival.
Our research projects (Conch, Mangroves, Aquaculture, and Artificial Reefs) are well underway, and we’re even starting to write our papers. We’ve been spending much of our free time doing field work, but we still have some time in the week to play tackle football in the ocean and go sunbathing. All in all we’re having a wonderful time. |
