Returning from the Kayak One

Shira & Molly

Well, we're a little delayed on getting what happened before November 1st, but it's not out fault. Instead of working really hard at school, we were working really hard out on the water as Kayak One or "Intrepid" for eight days. The first night, we were graced with the presence of rain and some of us ended up eating a mix of rice and beans with brownie batter for dessert. It got better as the trip went on and the anticipated solo got closer and closer. We'd talk about the solo, but for future Island Schoolers, we want the solo to be "your own experience." We kept quiet about the trip from the other half who eagerly awaited our arrival. On the last day of the kayak trip we had a relatively light paddle so we could set up camp early, and play a rousing game of ultimate Frisbee. The next morning, we had several quick classes on weather, trying to understand what we had been faced with on our trip. When we got back, we learned that a Semester-At-Sea boat from Proctor School in New Hampshire was in the marina and that we were going to have a Halloween party with them at the Bull Dolphin, an old restaurant close to campus. The party was a treat for those of us who hadn't experienced civilization for over a week, as were the various Island School faculty who chased after us with fake chain saws for a good Halloween scare. It was great for the community to be reunited if only for a brief time, and to be inundated with work once more. Just as we got back into the "swing of things" we were whisked away once more for the incredibly wondrous "Down Island" trip, where we embarked on a journey of amazing proportions.
