This has been a very busy week for everyone at The island school. Once the hurricane passed we were left with the task of putting everything back in order and getting rolling again with classes and kayak trips. We had a day in which to put everything back the way it was before Hurricane Michelle visited. We put all the bikes back where they belong, took off the storm shutters, washed sea spray off all the plants, put boats back in the water, and lots more. We didn't get that much serious damage here on campus, our aquaculture research project, however, "failed" when the hurricane blew away all of the fish cages. As we sat in the dining hall and waited for Hurricane Michelle to pass, we saw bright orange buoys attached to fish cages flying past us, and after the hurricane it was decided that the project could not be continued. Its members would plug into different research projects. Both the faculty and the students are very disappointed, and it is difficult for people to enter new research projects this far into the semester.
On a lighter note, the kayak trip that was foced to come in because of the hurricane, went back out. They were out for another four days and had a great time doing their 48 hour solo on Lighthouse Beach. They paddled up the coast to Cotton Bay. Those of us on campus had classes and finished our rotation with an overnight "down island" trip and a BBQ dinner at the Maxey's house. That night both groups were reunited for a Saturday night- unfortunately, we were all too tired to stay up, and went to bed earlier than usual. The next day was Sunday and we were free for most of the day - some people stayed inside and caught up on all of the work that is due in the next week, and some took bike rides or went snorkeling. Monday the 13th we returned to having classes again in our normal Grouper and Snapper groupings.
Since then we have been busily preparing for our parents to come this weekend. This involves setting up the art gallery, finishing our Junkanoo costumes, preparing for our research project presentations, and a lot more. Yesterday we were visited by a representative from one of the Bahamas national parties- the PLP, in preparation for a debate we had this morning. Before the debate this morning we got our very own tour of the new building. We can't wait for our parents to arrive tomorrow!
