This web update is brought to you by the coolest advisor group in Island School history: Alexei, Gigi, Jocelyn and Nathan (our advisor). The week has been extremely exciting. At all times, we were kept on our feet - though assignments or running during morning exercise. However, the highlight of our week was spending the weekend with our parents, siblings and other relatives. Family weekend began on Thursday evening and lasted until Sunday night. Thursday night began with an art gallery opening (complete with hors d'oeuvres) in the new building. We enjoyed dinner catching up on the past eleven weeks with all of our visitors.
Friday, after a short run and yoga, we had breakfast and began our science research presentations as soon as the parents arrived. The projects included Mangroves, Coastal Management and Artificial Reefs. Sadly enough, Aquaculture was unable to present due to disastrous effects that wiped out the fish cages (thanks Michelle!). Golly gee Jocelyn was upset. The presentations ran smoothly-even when Alexei's father interrogated all. Thank you Mr. Misoul! After, we had advisor and parent/teacher conferences. The students sat through all of the meetings and listened carefully to the many compliments that were given. The best part of Friday was the nighttime event: JUNKANOO. Holy cow, Nathan got down. He boogied the night away! Saturday morning began with an interesting start: a four-mile run to High Rock. Even the grandparents made it out. Unfortunately, due to rough conditions and poor underwater visibility, we were unable to SCUBA dive with our families later on that day. Despite that, we still had a great day going off campus. Some people chose to take bike rides, sea kayak, explore the surrounding areas and snorkle.
That night, we were woken up at four in the morning to watch the meteor shower. As Alexei puts it, "it was neato!" Jocelyn was interested to learn about the astronomy (NOT Astrology!) and at her request, John Shatz, resident astronomer, bounced over in his sleeping bag and taught her (and everyone else within earshot) some very cool inter-galactic facts. Sunday morning we were all tired and ready for a free day to spend with our parents. Tears streamed down Gigi's face as she realized that it was the last day of Parents' Weekend and although her family did not come, she was sad for her bunk mate (Jocelyn) and co-advisee (Alexei) when their families departed. Now that the parents have said "hasta luego" and left Eleuthera, we are back to our daily routine here at The Island School. It was an awesome weekend! Jocelyn: hey Mom, Dad, Rebecca, Danielle, Fieldston friends, Raquette Lakers (Yes Julia, here is your name on my web update! Aren't you proud?), etc… As I am sure you all know, I am having the best time ever. I only have 16 more days here and although I am sad to be leaving, I can't wait to see all of you. I love you! Alexei: Hey everyone, coming home in 2 weeks! I'm excited to see everyone again. Georgia: Hey mom, dad, Joy and Justin. Hi, Glenn. Can't wait to see you in Dallas. |
