Yoga during Morning Exercise

Week two thus far has been going well. On Sunday all students attended a Baptist Church in Deep Creek, which was interesting and gave everyone a taste of true Bahamian culture. Everyone could sing as loudly as they wanted without worrying, as that was the way the Bahamians sang. Orientation ended this week and normal classes began, a nice change giving us more free time. We divided into two groups, Grouper and Snapper, based on our Math class, giving us a set English, History, Science, and Art class for the semester. Intelligent Design and Interdisciplinary are two more classes that fit into the science course. We also signed up for our semester long research projects: Aquaculture, Artificial Reefs, Mangroves, and Coastal Management. Classes run from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. - a long but satisfying day.

Playing in the surf at Half Sound

Morning exercise has been going well. We ran to High Rock one day and jumped off, played water polo another morning, and were introduced to the famous Island School run/swim, a very intense workout. Everyone learned how to kayak this week in preparation for the three-day kayak trip next week.

Pete teaching the proper Kayak position

We had to flip over so we could learn how to get out and back into our kayaks, a very funny experience. We perfected our strokes. On Saturday after morning classes, everyone piled into two vans, and a suburban (which was lucky enough to get a flat tire) and went to Half Sound, a beautiful beach about one hour away. After an afternoon of snorkeling and lying out in the sun, we ate dinner on our snorkeling fins, something I think no one had ever tried. We watched the sun set around 7:30 as Jack and Alexei played guitar. It was a good end to the week.
