Over the past week the students have been getting back into the regular schedule of academics. We have been working hard in classes as well as completing our certification dives for SCUBA. Our research projects have also been gaining momentum as all the groups delve more deeply into the work of previous semesters. We have done two out of our four certification dives. For our first dive we went to a coral head called Tunnel Rock. We went down and practiced taking off our masks and putting them back on as well as taking out our regulators and replacing them. While on our dive we saw many beautiful fish such as, parrot fish, angelfish, yellow tail snapper and many more.
On our second dive we went back to Tunnel Rock and worked on more skills. We also got to go through the tunnel of Tunnel Rock, and see more amazing fish. The first group saw a scorpion fish, and the second group saw a 3-foot sting ray. Everyone thought the dive was awesome. We are still just in the early stages of our assigned research projects. Coastal management has been working hard drilling holes under water for sediment traps. The Mangrove Group has been working hard researching other mangrove projects and learning how to use the school's new tools so they can start their field work. The Artificial Reef Group has been discussing what our hypothesis will be, as well as snorkeling around the artificial reefs set by past students. The Aquaculture Group has been feeding their fish as well as catching yellow-tail snappers on which they will test their hypothesis. Everyone is enjoying their projects and remains very enthusiastic.
