Halloween was really fun around here. We started the night by heading down to the Bull Dolphin; none of us knew what expect. We watched the Exorcist and ate lots of candy. It was a wonderful treat. At the end of the night, we all piled back into the vans; to our surprise none of them started. We were forced to walk back to campus in the dark. Half way back, two scary men jumped out at us. Of course it was Tony and Jack trying to scare us (it worked!). It was a fun night. On Friday, November 2, the second kayak trip headed out for their adventure. The weather was rough, but they still decided to go on their way down the coast. The rest of us got back into academics. That night at dinner circle, Tony informed us of Hurricane Michelle - still a good way off, leaving us pleanty of time to prepare. Everybody got really excited. We had classes on Saturday and spent all of Sunday preparing the school. Around lunch time, the kayakers returned prematurely from their expedition. We boarded up all of the windows and moved our beds to the center of the dorms. We were also lucky enough to have to move gigantic piles of lumber to protect our new building. It was hard work.
Monday morning we left campus by 7:30 to go to the shelter; Deep Creek Primary School. Everyone laid around reading, watching DVD's, or sleeping until Michelle had passed. We returned to school around 2:00 the same afternoon. We were quite surprised to be hit again by some strong winds so we hunkered down in the dinning hall until that evening when it was clear and the breezes returned to their mellower ways! We suffered very minimal damage on campus. Tuesday was spent cleaning-up and getting ready for our "normal" schedules to re-start. Everyone began crafting their very creative Junkanoo costumes. They are bright and colorful. It should be quite a sight to see the final Junkanoo performance. Tuesday afternoon the kayakers met and decided to resume their suspended kayak expedition first thing on Wednesday (11/7) morning. Academic life is running full speed ahead and we are looking forward to the down island trip on Friday.
The academic group (those of us NOT currently on the kayak trip) had classes and research projects on Wednesday. Unfortunately, we have lost the Aquaculture Project. Michelle took our cages quite a ways down the coast, but was kind enough to return them albeit empty and broken. Aquaculture Research has been cancelled due to having absolutely nothing from which to collect data. It was an unfortunate occurrence seeing that aquaculture was obviously the strongest research project at The Island School this semester. Sadly, The amazing scientists from aquaculture have been split apart and placed into the other projects. Everything is going very well and we can't wait to see all of our special visitors in a week. This update has been brought to you by the most amazing advisee group ever to exist in the history of The Island School-- Molly's group.
