Kayak #3 (Le Poison)

Mina at Palm Island

Hey everyone- this is Jack's Advisee Group (Maggie, John, and Nina) with the latest update from the Bahamas. This has been another week of relaxing and tanning under the gorgeous Bahamas skies . . . right, not at all, although Kayak 3's (Le Poison) amazing Olympic pace kayak trip came pretty close. Not only did they travel ten fold the distance of the other kayak groups; they also managed to have a wonderful time. The food was ample and endurable, (no soapa soapa), the stars were amazing, the bugs few, and the jellyfish were unusually friendly.

John leading the way

The "regular schedule" of the Island School has returned in full gear. The beginning of this week saw the first of the open water dives for SCUBA certification, along with the commencement of the real work of the research projects. The dives have been limited by the unusually windy/rainy/cold (75 degree) weather, and we have not been able to explore anywhere outside of the marina. Classes have begun again with the first real tests being completed (science bathymetry and a killer conics test). A quick run through of the other classes:

English: Yes, we are still reading Omeros (yeah page 30!) but it is really interesting, particularly because of the multiple interpretations of the text.

History: Maps! Maps! Yeah pretty much maps! We have finally completed our written stories of the history of the formation of the Bahamas, and are again back to maps. Our next project focuses on intepretation of primary sources. We will be reading Columbus' journal and de las Casas in small groups.

Integration

Math: The classes are challenging but we all know that its good for us in the end (that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger).

Science: Research projects are off and running. The Bathymetry test has come and gone yet only Nina could tell you what it really means! (Nina- "Bathymetry- The study of the ocean's and its interactions at various depths")

Art: We have now completed the Integration portion of the course with our own Land and Environmental art sculpture, and are moving on to the second of the four I's, Interruption.

Our free time has been taken up by our extensive tanning . . . wait what free time? We actually have been kept really busy studying, writing letters, studying some more, going diving and cleaning up from our Kayak trips. However, there are always times when we think of home and really miss everyone reading this. Letters still remain one of the highlights of the week. Keep it coming!!!
