Farmer Brown

Another week has flown by here at the Island School. On Friday, everyone participated in CONCH DAY! Everything we did was related to conch… conch art, conch diving, conch math, and conch biology. We all piled into the small wooden fishing boats as we began our journey out to the "ideal diving spot" (Daryl, one the most respected fisherman on Cape Eleuthera, lead us there). Students probably collected a total of six conchs - it was very difficult, swimming against a tidal current and free diving! Our pathetic attempts at conch diving were completely put to shame by the amazing Daryl who frequently resurfaced with an average of twenty conchs per trip! Upon our return to campus, we learned how to clean a conch: basically, you have to hammer a hole into the top of the shell, stab a knife through, then pull the body out with your hand. Then you proceed to cut off the eyes and snout, then guts… oh and how could we forget, you must rip off the skin WITH YOUR TEETH. Other parts of Conch Day consisted of 30-minute art projects using mostly conch shells, learning the biology of conch, and eating nothing but the conch we caught for dinner! We also had a 78-year-old visitor named Farmer Brown who spoke to us for an hour about growing up on Eleuthera.

Saturday was a bit of a different story. After classes, we crammed into the school vans and headed to a fair and basketball game at Windermere High School (a Christian Private School north of Tarpum Bay). Let's just say it wasn't much of a game - they beat us 69-10! The high scorers of the game were Rebecca with 3, Brad with 3, Fletch with 2, and Chelsea with 2! We were satisfied with the score, considering Spring 2000's unacceptable 100-3. At the Windermere Fair, we played games, ate too much junk food… much to Pete's dismay.

Research project groups have been battling on the soccer field, in the cut playing water polo and playing ultimate. Aquaculture seems to be dominating, in second place is Coastal Management, struggling to beat them out once and for all. In Yoga, we've progressed to balancing on our elbows (Crow Pose).

Last week we wrapped up the lessons with our first community outreach students, so everyone's looking forward to meeting their new students, who will be coming this week!
