Hey to everyone from the Spring 2002 class! It has been a busy but enjoyable first week and a half for everyone. Since the first day, we have been occupied with orientation and plenty of new experiences. All of the students are adjusting well to Island School life, complete with 6:30 morning exercise, singing the Bahamian national anthem, snorkeling, and plenty of work, among other things.

We have had introductions to many activities and have just begun to delve into them. We wrote our first lesson plan for the lesson we will be teaching the sixth graders from Deep Creek we will be working with. Topics such as Grouper, Turtles, Marine No Take Reserves, and Waste Management were central in these plans. We will meet with them both at our campus and at their school throughout the semester.

Also during the first few days everyone went through their first Island School SCUBA and kayak class. Even people that were scared initially had a great time! Later that day we had a cookout at Powell Point, about a 15 min walk from campus. After roasting some marshmallows, we had our first community meeting and discussed our goals for the semester.

Getting into our slightly regular schedule, we have been going on runs, snorkels, and the occasional swim for morning exercise. After that we complete our chores and go to breakfast, and then classes until 4:30. Homework, a nap, or a bike ride usually occupy the time from 4:30 to 6, at which point it is dinner.

After dinner and clean up, we have study hours and go to bed at 10:30. Thanks for checking up on us! We miss everyone back on the mainland!!
