Kayak 3 before their 8-day expedition

In less than a month our semester will be over and all of us will be heading home. It is so hard to believe. This past week flew by. On Wednesday two Down Island trips headed North and the third Kayak trip left for their 8-day adventure leaving campus empty for two full days.

Thursday evening, Kayak 2 returned exhausted from their trip but excited to be back on campus. All of the other students were still gone, so the dorms were quiet, making for a great sleep in Friday morning. Slowly the Down Island trips came back and the energy on campus returned to its normal state. Stories of Down Island trips included exploring caves, visiting a huge banyan tree, the Glass Window Bridge, a trip to Harbour Island and many stops at local bakeries. In preparation for an intense academic week, Kayak 1 and 2 dug into Omeros that night during study hall while the Kayak 4 crew made preparations for their departure Saturday morning.

The weekend schedule looked more like a Monday/Tuesday than a Saturday/Sunday due to the 8-day kayak rotation schedule. Saturday morning was a run to high rock, which felt good, but our legs were definitely tired from long days in the kayaks. Research went well that morning. Permaculture researchers, in particular, were pleased with the success in the growth of their plants. Sunday was a full day of classes after having a long swim for morning exercise.

Monday morning began with a naturalist SCUBA dive. Our assignment was to find and observe an unknown organism under the surface. We will now work individually to prepare a presentation of this organism for the rest of the group. We also spent time working on Junkanoo. Our costumes are finished and the dance is slowly coming together!

This morning, exercise was led by Sophie, Miles and Connor. They designed an hour-long workout of running and intense calisthenics. A great way to start the day and to keep us geared up for the rest of the academic week.
