Finally all forty-one of us are back together after three weeks of kayak rotations! This week went really fast. Wednesday we shared another afternoon with the local kids from Deep Creek during Community Outreach and Kayak 3 returned from their eight-day trip. Thursday Kayak 3 left for their Down Island trip in the afternoon while the rest of us worked on Junkanoo. Friday morning we had an 8.5-mile run and we pushed ourselves hard knowing the half marathon is looming ahead – only two more weeks left to train! A lot of assignments were due Saturday, so Friday night study hall was busy finishing up Omeros and our final art projects. Saturday we started the day with a big yoga session, had a morning of research and then an afternoon full of classes. That evening Chris Maxey invited us down to his house for a dinner party on his dock to celebrate a hard week of academics. By 7pm that night, Kayak 4 and the last Down Island trip had returned to campus – all forty-one of us were back together! We spent the rest of the evening catching up, and watching movies.
Sunday a group of boys went into Deep Creek for church, there was a faculty vs. student basketball game, an afternoon Junkanoo practice and lots of time on the beach. Everyone needed the rest and time to relax after all of the trips and the tons of work. That afternoon Peter was fortunate to have his Mother and Grandmother surprise him with an early Parents Weekend visit. Yesterday, we had a great run to No Name Harbour where we jumped in the ocean, did laps and then ran back to campus. At lunch, advisor groups met and it was good to see and have all of the tables on the dining hall deck full again. Brie’s parents arrived in the afternoon and treated us all to an ice cream social as a break during study hall last night. This morning, circle was only half full because the entire boys dorm boycotted exercise and stayed in bed. We have invited all of our home stay families to campus for the Art Gallery Opening tomorrow night and will then have a thank you dinner for them afterwards. The energy that surrounds Parents Weekend has begun. A lot of preparations have taken place to welcome our parents to our home in The Bahamas. So, Travel safely and hurry up!
