Down Island Trips

In the last week, groups K1 and K2, which includes half of The Island School students, took a 3 day trip with their teachers to explore the island of Eleuthera. Driving in a van and camping on beaches were the modes of transport and shelter for our trips. During the 3 days we ventured through bat caves, jumped off high cliffs, ate traditional Bahamian meals, wandered through local settlements, and grew closer all the while. Random stops throughout the day included the sighting of wild horses and cows, amazing Banyan Trees, and a former US Naval base. This marked the highlight of 8 day rotations for many, and many purchased souvenirs that all of you will be seeing soon for certain.

K1 in all their finery.

Academic Rotations

As the down island trips came to an end, Friday night became one of the first study nights for K1 and K2 in a while. Saturday morning threw the returning kayak groups into the normal Island School morning exercise routine while the final kayak group departed for their 8-day trip.

Monday morning was split into swim and run tracks as there is little time left before the big day. Classes continued while the atmosphere of the Island School campus was quiet with only half of us here.

Tuesday was relaxing, but disappointing at the same time. Our scheduled SCUBA dive was canceled due to the high winds, but with the cancellation came time for us to catch up on sleep. The final Junkanoo costumes were created and everybody is excited to get out and dance.

Wednesday started with a student led psycho, by Charlie and Mackey, which was both painful and fun. Classes ended, and we were all treated to a fun Community Outreach session. Students from Deep Creek arrived at the Island School shortly after lunch. They were once again prepared for a fun action packed day here at the Island School. They played a game called “Save the Species.” Students with their group leader ran from station to station were they had to play a game to learn more facts about their creature. By the end of the game the students, through the process of elimination, were able to figure out what their animal was, and then shipped back off to school.

K2's DIT ends badly.
