Week Two
The last week has been exciting and challenging for all Island School students as we began the scuba/kayak rotation! While K1 and K2 went on their journey-filled kayak trips along the coastline of Eleuthera, K3 and K4 stayed on the Island School campus to become certified scuba divers!
Each kayak group consists of twelve students and two faculty instructors. The kayak groups learn kayak safety and skills before and during their trip. Going along the southern coast of Eleuthera, K1 and K2 fought against the tides to reach their two destinations for each day; one for lunch and one for dinner. K1 took a van to Rock Sound and paddled home, while K2 started at school and paddled to Green Castle and back. Students learned fire making skills, as well as tips in wilderness food preparation to make tasty meals. With fresh water only for drinking, students went without showers for these three days and learned to be conservative with other limited resources on the trip. For the two nights spent away from school, K1 and K2 pitched tents or their personal hammocks and enjoyed sleeping in the wilderness. Two leaders in each group were chosen each day to find destinations, make plans, and lead the trip in general.
Everybody had a great time preparing food, pitching tents, swimming in blue holes (checking out barracudas), stargazing, and hanging out with new friends. Sometimes the weather was not on our side, consisting of thunder and lightning storms, but each day we managed to pull ourselves through! It was a great experience to be able to see the beautiful coastline of Eleuthera and the many creatures that live here in the Bahamas. Teamwork and safety were essential to this exciting adventure and K1 and K2 returned ashore on Tuesday, glad to be home again. K3 and K4 started their kayak trips on Thursday and will return to us on Saturday.
Shoutouts Robby: Hey everybody back at Nobles and in Duxbury. Nobles: I hope you guys got off to a great start in an awesome junior year. I saw some of you over the summer, and I can’t wait to get back December 7th and hang out with everybody. I know you guys will keep working hard, both physically and academically. However, if there is one thing I have learned here at The Island School, it is that fun and work are of equal importance; don’t get caught up in one without the other. As for the teams, you guys rock. Football especially, I wish I was there fighting with you guys, and I will be back on the team senior year. Go dogs. Duxbury: Hey guys, good luck with your season, too. I can’t wait to chill with all of you when I come home on the weekends this winter. Kelley C: Heyyyy Everybody!! I am having such an awesome time down here! Everything is so amazing! Mom, I have to admit if you had not helped me pack I would not have had the right stuff hahaha. Oh my god Jack, scuba diving is the bomb! It is the most awesome thing to go under water and be able to breathe! I know why you fell in love with this place! Except the bugs were so awful, I think I had at least 150 bug bites on each leg at one point in time, no joke. Katie, are you enjoying your own bedroom??? hahaha. Say “Hi” to Petie, and Little Boy for me. Dad keep workin’ hard, you would love it down here. Nana and Grandad, I miss you lots and thanks so much for the letter! Maddy and Post stay out of trouble…at least until I get back haha jk. Kayla, I miss your High School Musical talk and Nalini, I expect you to play basketball with me when I get back home. Brodie and King, hope football is going well! Mom, keep plugging away at those books, just think when I get back you will basically be done with school. Well, I miss everyone sooo much and I will see you all in a little while! Peace.
