Week Four

This week at The Island School started off with a bang. Homestay visits were fantastic; we ate a lot of Bahaman food and this was our one day to pig out. Some of the things we ate were guava duff, hog plums, conch burgers and fritters, and cold sodas!!! All forty-eight of us were dispersed throughout the island, from Deep Creek to Tarpum Bay. We stayed with a family for the day, and all felt truly welcome and immersed into the community. Some of us went to the beach, went fishing, fixed cars, or cooked.

Saturday night Coffeehouse was a blast. There was a wide range of performances-- from miming to Fieldy’s amazing broom act. Other performances included dances to Spice Girls and “Crank That,” and a full rendition of “Let It Be,” performed by Hannah’s awesome advisory group. Coffeehouse was followed by brownies on the dining room deck, generously baked by the faculty and then students could choose whether they wanted to jam with Eric or watch Planet Earth. It was a great night.

Sunday was a lazy day, giving us plenty of time to catch up on our sleep and just relax. A few students shuttled off for church to sing their hearts out, while some others did a bible study with Nick and Sam. Then Monday came and morning exercise was a choice between yoga with Laura or water polo with Dimmel. Both were said to be marvelous.

Classes on Monday were far from ordinary. In true Island School style, we had math class a mile and a half out to sea on the sandbar. Our assignment was to derive a theory about the distance to the true horizon. Science class was spent out in the mangrove swamps studying the different types of plant life.

It’s not all fun and play here at the island school…there’s some serious studying going on here! We all were thankful the storm gave us extra studying time for us to complete our work.

Wednesday we were excited to get a break to study as a lightning storm passed over. The storm was ominous, to say the least. The girls practiced their lightning positions in their dorms during the night. During the morning we had mandatory free time due to the lingering thunderstorm. We were bummed about missing scuba diving and legacy projects, but we got time to study and relax.  Right now we are all signing off on this weekly update because our community outreach children have arrived.
