Week Seven

Hello, everybody! This past week many exciting things occurred. Friday began with cumulative research presentations from each group. Everybody was nervous, but the students shined as they shared their newfound knowledge and skills.

In the afternoon, everybody finally got SCUBA certified at the Cathedral! While half of the group finished diving, the other half explored different settlements in the island, for example Tarpum Bay, Rock Sound, and Green Castle. The students had the chance to meet locals and try new dishes such as conch salad and grouper fingers.

Meagan, Julie, and Meeta spending time in the Current Cut

On Saturday night, we had planned to attend Wemyss Bight, another settlement, for Homecoming, a tradition for towns throughout The Bahamas for residents returning home. Due to weather, the party was cancelled, and students volunteered to cook the community dinner, consisting of pancakes, French fries, bacon, and lemonade, as the rest prepared to chill and watch a movie.

Students enjoyed exploring the Cape on Sunday, with many floating the Current Cut, better known as the Lazy River, and visiting the Marina store. The rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing and preparing for the rest of the academic week.

Ben and Stan learn how to use a sextant during a math field trip to High Rock

This week started off with a Monday morning free dive for exercise and a snorkel out to the wall of the Exuma Sound to learn about the creation of the trough. Celestial Navigation class introduced a new topic of sextants! We headed out to High Rock and we learned to take the readings of the horizon and sun for the first time. In science, people will have a chance to redeem themselves on the second reasoning exam.
